Bolagsverket data in journalism
What the register contains, what you can prove and how to cite the source
The Bolagsverket register is a public document and one of the best sources for journalistic scrutiny of companies and networks. However, the register has clear limitations that are important to understand before publication.
What the register contains
Facts you can cite directly
Organisation number, company name, company type, registration date, registered office address, authorised signatories and board members. These are official data from a government register and are public documents.
Patterns relevant as research signals
Address patterns, shared board members, registration rate and company type distribution. These are observable facts in the register that can provide entry points for further research, but require additional source verification.
What the register does not contain
Ownership stakes, transactions, banking relationships, tax assessments, criminal suspicions or historical address records. For ownership information: see Euroclear (Swedish listed companies) or annual reports at Bolagsverket.
What you cannot prove with register data alone
That companies "are connected", are controlled by the same person, are used for tax planning or are involved in misconduct. Register data provides patterns, not conclusions about intentions or legality.
Citation wording
"According to the Bolagsverket register, [company name] is registered at the address [address]." Avoid "reveals" or "proves" unless there is additional evidence. Register data is factual background, not investigative reporting.
