Practice Mode

Open a song from the library, pick a passage and press Practise this section. Fabbe loops the passage, asks whether each repetition was clean and raises the tempo only when the requirement is met. Everything is saved in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Open a song from the library, or try the example riff.
  2. Mark bars in the notation or type the first and last bar. Give the section a name and a target tempo and save it.
  3. Choose Practise this section. Fabbe suggests a start tempo of 70 percent of the target and raises it by five BPM per level.
  4. After each pass you answer Clean or Not clean (key 1 or 2). Three clean passes in a row are needed to move on.
  5. Next time choose Continue where you left off and start at the tempo you reached.

How does Practice Mode raise the tempo?

Practice Mode loops a part of a song and raises the tempo in steps, but only when you have played cleanly. You set the bars and a target tempo. Fabbe suggests a start tempo at 70 percent of the target: with a target of 180 BPM the start is 126 BPM.

After each repetition you answer whether it was clean. By default the tempo goes up by 5 BPM once you have played three clean repetitions in a row at the level.

  • The increase per level can be set between 1 and 60 BPM.
  • The number of clean repetitions in a row can be set between 1 and 20.
  • A repetition that was not clean resets the streak. The tempo stays where it is and never drops by itself.

Why practise one part at a time?

Practicing a short section instead of the whole song gives more repetitions of the part that is hard. You can play a four-bar riff dozens of times in a few minutes. If you play the whole song, the hard part gets one repetition per run-through.

Sections get a name. The suggestions are intro, main riff, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, solo, difficult part and outro.

Score, sound and saved progress

The score and tab show the contents of the file, and you can choose which track is shown. You can turn on the metronome, use a count-in before each repetition and adjust the volume.

Sections, current tempo and personal best are saved in your browser. Next time you choose Continue where you left off and start at the tempo you reached. The song page in My Songs shows the progress together.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a clean repetition?

You decide. After each pass you answer whether you played the passage without mistakes at the right tempo. Fabbe does not listen to your playing.

What happens if I make a mistake?

The run of clean passes starts over and you stay at the same tempo until the requirement is met. The tempo is never lowered on its own.

Which files can I practise with?

Files you have added to the library: Guitar Pro (.gp, .gpx, .gp5, .gp4, .gp3), MusicXML and MIDI. You can also practice on the example riff without adding a file.

Does the start tempo have to be 70 percent of the target?

No. You can enter the current tempo yourself when you create or edit the section. If you leave the field empty, Fabbe suggests 70 percent of the target tempo.
