Tab player

Open your own file and practise the riff bar by bar. The tab plays back in the browser with sound per track. The file is handled on your computer only and is never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose Open file, drag a file onto the tool or try Open example. The formats .gp, .gpx, .gp5, .gp4, .gp3, MusicXML and MIDI work.
  2. Press Play or the space bar. Change bar with the left and right arrow keys.
  3. Select a passage in the notation, or type the first and last bar and choose Set loop. The passage repeats until you clear it.
  4. Lower the tempo with the slider and raise it in small steps when the passage is solid. Mute or solo single tracks in the list.

Which file formats can the tab player open?

The tab player opens Guitar Pro files in the formats .gp, .gpx, .gp5, .gp4 and .gp3, plus MusicXML and MIDI. That covers almost every tab shared online. The file is read on your computer and never uploaded to a server.

How to practise a hard passage with a loop

Select the bars that are difficult and play them in a loop at a low tempo. Raise the tempo when the passage is solid. It is more effective than playing the whole song over and over, since you spend the most time where you make mistakes.

  • Start at 60 to 70 percent of the original tempo.
  • Mute the track you play yourself if you want to hear the band without your part.
  • Raise the tempo in small steps and log the result in the practice log.

Tab and notation: what does the view show?

Tab shows which string and fret to play, while notation shows pitch and rhythm. Together they give both the fingering and the timing for each note in the riff.

  • The space bar starts and stops playback.
  • The left and right arrow keys change bar.
  • The track list shows each instrument in the file, with Mute and Solo per track.
  • The loop repeats the selected bars until you clear it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to upload my tab anywhere?

No. The file is opened and played in your browser and never leaves your device.

Can I slow the tempo down without changing the pitch?

Yes. The tempo controls how fast the tab is played and the notes keep their pitch. Lower the tempo with the slider and raise it in small steps when the passage is solid.

Which files can I open?

Guitar Pro (.gp, .gpx, .gp5, .gp4, .gp3), MusicXML and MIDI. Under Open example there is a ready file that shows how playback works.

How do I loop a single bar?

Select the passage in the notation, or type the first and last bar and choose Set loop. Using the same bar as first and last gives a loop over one bar.

Can I play Guitar Pro files online without Guitar Pro?

Yes. Open the file in the Tab player and it shows tab and notation and plays the file with sound per track. It is free, needs no account and no installation, and the file stays on your device.

Can I mute my own instrument and play along with the band?

Yes. The track list has Mute and Solo per track. Mute the track you play yourself and let the rest of the band run, or mark a hard passage and play it in a loop at a lower tempo.
